Understanding is translation, and the real understanding is to make creative explanations that conform to the connotation and denotation of the original work.Based on George Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory, this paper makes an analysis on the process of“hermeneutic operation”of Canadian scholar Graham Sanders in translating Chinese classical literary work Six Records of A Life Adrift into English, finding that Sanders follows the hermeneutic translation theory, namely, trust, aggression, incorporation and reciprocity in his process of translation, and thus maximizing the connotation and denotation of the original work.
