Matthew Tyson Yates's wrote First Lessons in Chinese(《中西译语妙法》),which was a reference book to help foreigners learn and use the Shanghai Dialect.This book mainly uses indo-european grammar as the framework to explore the Shanghai Dialect grammar at the end of the 19th century,and has phonetic and lexical research value.This paper mainly uses the method of historical comparative linguistics to analyze and explore the influence and value of the book,in addition to discussing the content and deficiencies of First Lessons in Chinese(《中西译语妙法》).
