A New Probe into the Connotation of LIN Daiyu’s Songs of Five Beauties

《红楼梦》第六十四回中,林黛玉题作了一组咏史诗《五美吟》。就诗歌本身来说,这组诗反映了黛玉对女子命运的深刻思考和自我选择意识的觉醒,倾诉着她对真实而自由的爱情的殷切向往,同时也展现了其出众的诗才和史识,在一定程度上丰富了黛玉的性情和形象;从整个情节来看,宝钗评诗、黛玉作诗分别阐发、践行着小说中所包含的诗学思想,而黛玉所悲叹的红颜薄命则是贯穿前后情节的共同主题。

In chapter 64 of A Dream of Red Mansions,LIN Daiyu composed a group of historical poems Songs of Five Beauties.These poems reflected her profound thinking of the women’s fate and the wakening of self-selection consciousness.Further,they poured out her longing for the true free love and showed her outstanding poetic talent and historical knowledge,which enriched her character and image.From the whole story,Baochai’s comment on poetry and Daiyu’s composition of poems respectively interpreted and practiced the poetic thought connoted in the novel.And the tragic end of the beauties over which Daiyu sighed is the subject running through the whole plot.
