Emily, the heroine in A Rose for Emily,is neither a mere symbol conveying the author′s intention and nor a literary character implying some ideals;she should be seen,in a possible world created by the fiction,as a flesh-and-blood individual suffering from mental disorder. The possible world and the space in which Emily exists give her life and meaning, and endow the story with rich and profound significance, but not the complete negation and criticism of the old South. The occasional revelation of ambiguity and contradiction in the story is projected by Faulkner′s personal conflict, expressing his obsession with the Southern past beyond its criticism.
