Grottoes are different from other landscape elements in Italian Renaissance gardens.Their images are mysterious and grotesque. They are often accompanied by mosses and waterscape, but they are indispensable in Italian classical gardens. This is mainly related to the profound connotation embodied in the gardens.Through the mystical nature, grotto becomes the embodiment of the emotional sustenance, aesthetic trend and social and cultural development of the garden owners. The popularity of humanistic aesthetics in Italian Renaissance society accelerated the role of grottoes in the landscape. Therefore,it is helpful for us to have a deeper understanding of the whole picture of Italian landscape to detect the cultural connotation of grottoes in the landscape.
