The Nilakanthadharani(Dharani of the Bodhisattva with a Thousand Hands and Eyes Who Regards the World’s Sounds with Great Compassion) is an important text of the Vidydhara school of esoteric Buddhist teachings. Many eminent monks of the Tang dynasty, including Zhi Tong, Bodhiruci and Vajrabodhi have translated it. The Dunhuang manuscript P.3920 A also contains a translation of this text. This paper focuses on one dharani of the text, the Da shen zhou, and compares the voiced initials in its Sanskrit version with those in the various Chinese versions, in order to investigate the development of voiced obstruents and sonorants as well as the phenomenon of devoicing during the Tang dynasty.
