Classifier-noun constructions in Weijiang Miaohua,a variety of Pinghua平话Chinese spoken by the Miao苗people in Weijiang Township,Longsheng,Guangxi,can be modified by personal pronouns,proper nouns,noun phrases,locational phrases,stative adjectives,verb phrases,and relative clauses.They can be used in appositive structure.Syntactically,they can act as a subject,a topic,an object,an attributive or a predicate in sentences,and can occur in non-subject-predicate sentences.When serving as independent syntactic constituents,the nominal heads of classifier-noun constructions can be omitted in some contexts,and the classifiers are then used by themselves as the subject,the attributive,or the object in the sentences.The classifier-noun constructions have various pragmatic functions,including the referential functions such as definiteness,indefiniteness and non-referentiality as well as other pragmatic functions such as situational use,tracking use,associative-anaphoric use,recognitional use and larger situational use.
