In the conspiracy of patriarchy and white culture,“True Woman”was the norm of femininity widely believed and recognized during the American civil war in the 19th century.Their Eyes were Watching God portrays three marriages of a black woman Jenny, describing her change from compliance, deviation to transcendence to the traditional norm of western ideal femininity. The novel reflects on the negative effects exerted on norms of African American women, explores the modern femininity prospectively, which goes far beyond the time limitation and has been ranked as a well-deserved classic of American women's literature.
