古希腊哲人色诺芬曾讲述过赫拉克勒斯成年时在"美德"与"邪恶"之间进行选择的故事。这一故事在古典时代屡经重述和改写,用于表达不同的伦理含义。在文艺复兴时期,这一故事重新受到关注,并成为极为流行的绘画题材。赫拉克勒斯普遍被视为美德的化身,"赫拉克勒斯的选择"被认为表达了注重个人和现世荣誉的时代精神。至17和18世纪,这一故事得到了更多艺术形式的呈现和思想性的讨论,其伦理含义也注入了启蒙精神。浪漫主义终结了对赫拉克勒斯的道德化解释,这一故事逐渐湮没无闻。
The story of"Heracles’Choice between Virtue and Vice"was first told by the Greek philosopher Xenophon and thereafter retold and rewritten by many classical authors to express different ethic meanings.During the Renaissance,this story became a most popular theme of painting.Heracles was generally deemed as the embodiment of virtue,and his choice represented the spirit of individuality and worldly honor.In the 17th and 18th centuries,this story received more artistic and critical attention,and the Enlightenment spirit was instilled into its ethical meaning.Romanticism finally ended the moral interpretation of Heracles,and this story eclipsed into silence.
