华兹华斯在《序曲》中对中国园林及园林盆景都有描写,但经过多次大范围的修改,留下来的只有中国园林片段。华兹华斯对中国园林片段的创作和修改体现了其时英国社会对于中国园林的矛盾心理:一方面,他们对中国园林有着强烈的认知欲望,积极"生产"有关中国园林的知识;另一方面,他们又试图摆脱中国园林对他们的影响。华兹华斯通过"他者化"中国园林、抹杀中国园林中的园艺成分,不仅有效地缓解了这种"影响的焦虑",还淡化了中国在英国现代民族性建构中的作用。
In The Prelude William Wordsworth gave a detailed description of the Chinese garden and its"vegetable dwarfs",yet after several extensive revisions,only the Chinese garden episode remained.Wordsworth’s composing and reworking of The Prelude gave expression to contemporary British people’s ambivalent psychology.On the one hand,they had a strong desire to learn about the Chinese garden,taking the initiative in"producing knowledge"of it;on the other hand,they tried to get rid of the influence of Chinese gardening.By shaping the Chinese garden as"the other"and smoothing over the horticultural element from the Chinese garden,Wordsworth not only alleviated this"anxiety of influence",but also attenuated the important role China had played in the process of establishing their own"Englishness".
