Multiple Voices and the Gramophone Images in The Waste Land

在《荒原》注释中,艾略特强调了铁瑞西斯看到的内容,然而作为盲人,铁瑞西斯实际上只能听到荒原上的各种声音,同时《荒原》的原标题《他用不同的声音读警察报告》也突出了声音的重要性。在目前的《荒原》研究中,由于缺乏对诗歌中声音符号的研究,因此我们无法真正串联表面看来支离破碎的诗行。事实上,《荒原》中的留声机意象既突出了声音在诗歌中的重要作用,同时又成为联结各种声音的有效途径。诗歌中的留声机意象上充分表达了艾略特理想的声响与情感的高度统一。

In the notes to The Waste Land,T.S.Eliot stresses what Tiresias sees.Actually,as a blind man,Tiresias can only hear voices rather than see anything in the waste land.In addition,the original title of the poem He Do the Police in Different Voices also reveals the importance of voices in The Waste Land.The present lack of academic study of the voices in The Waste Land disables us to find links between apparently fragmentary parts in the poem.In fact,the significant gramophone image in the poem can be an accessible approach to highlighting voices and to linking fragmentary parts in the poem.
