Critics’attention to J.M.Synge mainly concerns his plays, taking The Aran Island as a prefacing stage to his later dramatic writings and neglecting its value in itself.Visiting the Aran Islands in the west of Ireland from 1898 to 1902,Synge lived with the islanders and experienced the"primitive"life in the form of field work there,a living presence of the Celtic culture.Through his observation and recording of the ritual activities, mythical imaginations and pagan beliefs of the islanders,Synge explored the spiritual essence of the Celtic Ireland in a root-seeking journey.
