沉香打败舅舅二郎神,劈山救出三圣母的故事,亦称为宝莲灯故事。三圣母与书生的爱情故事源自唐代华岳神女的传奇小说,二郎神在明代故事中为玉帝外甥,也有劈山救母的经历。二郎神、沉香故事在宋元明清交融在一起,形成人物亲属关系有着一定的偶然性。二郎神、沉香故事蕴含文学中人神相恋的母题,劈山救母的情节同质同构反映了争取恋爱婚姻自由、反抗强权的相同主题。
