Conversational Implicature Analysis in A Farewell to Arms

《永别了,武器》是美国著名作家海明威的代表性作品。整部小说以对话贯穿情节,成功地运用对话塑造人物,揭示主题。本文试从语用学角度,运用合作原则解读主要人物的话语片段中蕴含的会话含义。小说的主要人物的性格获得更加深入挖掘的同时,海明威对于战争、爱情以及宗教的态度也得到了较为清晰的体现。本文对《永别了,武器》中的会话含义所做的分析,也为合作原则研究提供了语料。

A Farewell to Arms is a representative work of famous American writer Hemingway.The whole novel runs through the plot with dialogue,and successfully uses dialogue to shape characters and reveal themes.From the perspective of pragmatics,this paper tries to interpret the conversational implicature contained in the discourse fragments of the main characters by using the Cooperative Principle.While the main characters of the novel are more deeply excavated,Hemingway’s attitude towards war,love and religion is also clearly reflected.The analysis of conversational implicature in Farewell to Arms also provides a corpus for the study of Cooperative Principle.
