Physicalism, namely the thesis that everything is physical,is the most prevailing metaphysics in contemporary philosophy of mind. But what is the exact meaning of the“physical”?This paper argues that the physical theory scheme and the object scheme fail to provide a satisfactory formulation of physicalism. On the contrary, this paper proposes a hybrid version of the via negativa which suitably characterizes the“physical”and avoids the pitfalls plaguing the current via negativa scheme.
