The vermilion gate, embodying the wealth of the secular society, was a symbol of political power while the thatched house,a jungle temple for Buddhist monks, was a religious land aloof from the secular world. In the Period of the Six Dynasties, the vermilion gate and thatched house were intertwined, and the involvement of Buddhist monks in secular politics was quite common. The complex relationship between Buddhism and politics created a special scene in which Buddhism became active on the secular political stage in the Period of the Six Dynasties. The participation of Buddhist monks in politicswas related not only to the political ideal of Buddhism itself, but also to the special political situation in that period. However,Buddhism was always under the effective control of the secular monarchy instead of being superior to the royal power.
