美国图书馆学家沙本生的中国之旅:经过与影响

Critical Survey of Charles Bunsen Shaw’s Journey to China in 1947-1948

1947年10月—1948年1月,美国图书馆学家沙本生由中国基督教大学联合董事会派往中国考察中国教会大学图书馆事业。在胡绍声的陪同下,他辗转上海、南京、北平、济南、武汉、重庆、成都、苏州、杭州、广州、福州等地,进行考察、举行会谈、发表讲演,并在返美后提交了一份详细报告。他积极推动文华图专和华中大学合并,可惜最后未能成功。经他推荐,六名中国图书馆学人赴美深造。除王肖珠留在美国工作外,金云铭、胡绍声、喻有信、黄维廉、邓光禄五人全部学成归国,为新中国图书馆事业做出了贡献。

From October 1947 to January 1948,Charles Bunsen Shaw,a well-known American library scholar,was sent by the United Board for Christian Colleges in China to make a tour of investigation of thirteen Christian college libraries in China.Accompanied by Lawrence S.S.Hu,he travelled to Shanghai,Nanking,Peiping,Tsinan,Wuchang,Chungking,Chengtu,Soochow,Hangchow,Canton,Foochow and some other places,making investigations,having meetings and giving lectures,and submitted a detailed report after he returned to the United States.He actively promoted the reunion of Boone Library School with Huachung University,which regretfully failed in the end.On his recommendation,six Chinese librarians,including Phyliss Chiu-chu Wang,Yun-min Chin,Lawrence S.S.Hu,Charles Y.S.Yu,Vi-lien Wong,and Gwang-Lu Den,were awarded a one-year fellowship for further study in the United States.Apart from Phyliss Chiu-chu Wang,who stayed in the United States all her later life,the other five returned to China and contributed to the librarianship of the People’s Republic of China.
