在《爱丽丝漫游镜中世界》里面,有一首诗叫《海象和木匠》。诗的开头是这样写的:太阳照在海面上,水波粼粼泛金光:……可是事情很稀奇,因为这是大晚上。晚上出太阳!你一定会认为这是不可能的事情,只是童话故事里的玩笑话罢了。可是,在挪威和瑞典的最北边,这样的情形却是真真实实存在的。在挪威的最北边,有一大块伸入北冰洋海中的岬角,叫作北角。北角这个地方没有人居住,但是来自世界各地的游客都会到这里来,为的就是看午夜时分的太阳照耀在海面的情景。
