Debate between Lu Xun and Liang Shiqiu on the Faithfulnessand Smoothness of Translation

二十世纪三十年代,翻译界就翻译标准的“信”“顺”发生了激烈论战。其中,林纾、严复为代表的近代译论体系在论战双方的翻译观念中都有所体现,成为了论战的依据;双方站在不同的阶级立场、存在文化、政治等利益上的矛盾,使得论战成为必然;而论战的两位主将在不同的文化教育环境中形成的迥异的个人翻译理念,成为论战的直接原因。

In the 1930s,fierce debates took place in the translation field regarding the“faithfulness”and“smoothness”of translation standards.The system of translation theory mainly constructed by Lin Shu and Yan Fu was embodied in the translation views of both sides,which became the basis of the debate,different social class stances of the two sides and contradictions in cultural and political interests made the debate inevitable,different personal translation views of the two leaders formed in their respective cultural and educational environments was the direct cause of the debate.
