Translatability Obstacles of Reduplicated Words in Chinese Poetryand its Translation Strategies

诗歌叠词往往兼具语意、语音、形态三维美感,而在翻译中,中英语言结构与音韵结构的差异性为再现诗歌叠词美设置了重重障碍。障碍虽使诗歌叠词“三美”的完美传译遥不可及,然而通过对英语与汉语自身的语言特色、语音及修辞特点的充分研究与利用,从词汇、语音、语意三个层面传译变通补偿,诗歌叠词英译仍然可以找到可行的翻译途径。

Poetry translation is difficult while translation of the reduplicated words is even harder.There are great differences between Chinese and English in their language structure and rhyming system,which lay great obstacles for translation.Although the perfect delivery of“Three Beauties”in the Chinese poetry is almost a mission impossible,the possible translation strategies are still available for us by making the best of the language structure,rhetoric devices and rhyming features of English and Chinese,and flexibly using the translation skills on the lexical level,phonetic level and semantic level.
