The Characteristics of Wei Yuan’s Interpretation of The Great Learning

魏源是近代著名的思想家,他认同《大学》古本,用程、朱理学思想为注解,穷源及流,爬梳理学原著,全面梳理了二程、朱熹、王阳明等人的《大学》诠释思想,指出了理学末流的误读,论证了程、朱之学诠解《大学》古本在义理上的精妙与圆融。在《大学》概念范畴的诠释上,魏源以程、朱理学为主,也不废陆、王之学,同时开出新义理,突出伦常重要性,强调践履实行,可谓返本开新,成一家之言。

Wei Yuan was a famous thinker in modern times.He thought highly of the ancient version of The Great Learning and interpreted it based on Neo-Confucianism thoughts of the Cheng brothers(Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi)and Zhu Xi.Based on a thorough research of related theories and works,he comprehensively combed the annotation thoughts of The Great Learning by the Cheng brothers,Zhu Xi,Wang Yangming and others,pointing out the misunderstandings of the last followers of Confucianism,demonstrating that the interpretation of the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi is subtle and harmonious.The interpretation of the concepts and categories of The Great Learning is mainly based on the studies by Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi while it’s not a negation of the study by Lu Jiuyuan and Wang Yangming.At the same time,new thoughts are developed,highlighting the importance of ethics and emphasizing the implementation of practice,so that it is an integration of the traditional thoughts and the newly developed ones.
