Local Specialties:Yongzhou Cliff Inscriptions And Their Textual Production

永州位于潇湘二水交汇之地,又处于荆楚—岭南南北交通要道之上,其独具特色的“水石文化”,为永州摩崖石刻的产生提供了自然地理的条件。中唐时代,生性浪漫的文学家元结对永州山水泉石情有独钟,他对阳华岩、朝阳岩、三吾胜迹的命名与文化开发,他对《大唐中兴颂》的改写与书刻,使永州摩崖成为南北乃至中外文学文化交流的重要平台,并由此形成永州摩崖石刻的三大特色系列:偏重政治性的铭颂、偏重文化性的榜题以及偏重文艺性的诗文。这不仅丰富了永州地方文化和古代石刻文化的内涵,而且从一个特殊角度展示了中国古代文化的精神与特色。

Yongzhou is located at the intersection of Xiao River and Xiang River and is also on the traffic artery from the Jing-Chu area to the Lingnan area.Its unique water and stone culture provides a natural geographical condition for the production of cliff inscriptions.Yuan Jie,a romantic writer in mid-Tang dynasty and a lover of Yongzhou mountain,water and stone,discovered and named such scenic spots as Yanghua Rock,Chaoyang Rock and Wu Creek.His rewriting and inscriptions of The Ode to the Reviving Tang Dynasty made Yongzhou Cliff an important platform for literary and cultural exchanges between writers across northern and southern China,and even between Chinese and foreign writers.As a result,three series of Yongzhou Cliff inscriptions with local specialty came into being:political inscriptions in the form of odes and eulogies,cultural inscriptions in the genre of landscape appreciation,and literary inscriptions in the form of poems and proses.This has not only enriched the connotation of Yongzhou local culture and ancient stone inscription culture,but also manifested the characteristics of ancient Chinese culture from a special perspective.
