In The Bell Jar,Esther’s confrontation with the life-or-death choice and struggle between body and soul correspond to Heidegger’s thought of“Being-toward-death”.By the choice of committing suicide and the Da-sein of others that have come to an end,Esther attempts to reach her wholeness in death. In the end, being fully aware of herself as a whole, she shifts the focus of life to survival by undergoing the experiences of impending death.Esther’s“being-toward-death”brings hope to American females who live under the invisible bell jar of the society, and hence endows women with a new understanding of life.
