John Steinbeck’s East o f Eden focuses on how the anxious Chinese Americans identified themselves in the late 19th century and early 20th century in America. It is a time when they were generally marginalized by the mainstream culture—white supremacy. This article aims to explore how Lee,the Chinese American, struggles to make a living in the American culture. It discusses how Lee’s identity changes from the loss of“the real me”to the dilemma between“the real me”and“the objectified me”,and then to the identification of“the real me”.Lee’s anxiety over his identity highlights the hostile atmosphere in America for the Chinese Americans to survive after the gold rush, where and when they live under much pressure of the predicaments of the exclusion of Chinese and white supremacy.
