Who defines public space? Who makes public space public? The paper begins with the reflection on today’s public space in China as a display of formalism, through which to interrogate the facticity of its "publicity". It maps out three recent socially-engaged and public participatory projects to explore the construction of "publicity" and the roles people played in making public spaces. These projects challenge not merely the ways of public space being understood and imagined by authorities and designers, but also the notion of "public" and the production of "space".
