Attempt to Write a Novel in Ku-wen:As an Example of Han Yu's Shih Ting Lien-chu Shih with Its Preface

陈寅恪先生所言中唐时期的古文家“以古文试作小说”,尤以韩愈为典型代表,呈现了当时古文运动全貌中的一隅。《〈石鼎联句诗〉序》文体复杂,叙事生动,文意隐晦,是以古文的形制创作的小说。韩愈通过创作兼具娱戏与讽喻特征的小说,将“文”之独立性与“道”之超验性有机结合,使得古文文体在“载道”的意义上获得了合法性,为理解中唐古文运动提供了独特的视角。

When Mr.Tschen Yinkoh talked about the ancient writers of the Mid-Tang period,he said that they attempted to write novels in ku-wen.Han Yu is a typical representative of these writers,which showed a glimpse of the Ancient Prose Movement at that time.As for Shih Ting Lien-chu Shih with its preface which is a novel written in the form of ancient prose,its style is complex,the narration vivid,and the text obscure.By experimenting with novels,Han Yu created the ancient prose with the characteristics of entertainment and allegory,and organically combined the independence of the text with the transcendentalism of“Tao”,which made the ancien t prose style gain legitimacy in the sense of^carrying Tao",and provided a unique perspective for understanding the Ancient Prose Movement at that time.
