On the Layout of the Joint Burial of Li Maozhen Couple of the Five Dynasties and Inscriptions on Stone Sculptures

李茂贞夫妇墓是五代时期节度使级别的高等级墓葬。墓葬模仿唐代帝陵使用石室以彰显其身份。其夫人墓的八角形后室和砖雕装饰明显受到河北地区影响,是当时河北集团统治中原王朝历史背景的体现。墓葬神道石刻有重复现象,可能是夫妇二人两次入葬两次设置的结果。

The joint burial of Li Maozhen and his wife of the Five Dynasties represents one important case of contemporary high status tombs belonging to the rank of jiedushi(regional military governors).The burial included a stone chamber imitating the practice of the imperial mausoleums of the Tang Dynasty as a way to demonstrate the owners’high status.The tomb of Li Maozhen’s wife is characterized by an octagonal rear chamber with decorations of brick carving.Both features were influenced by the mortuary customs from Hebei and might be related to underlying historical background that the dynasty in the Central Plains was ruled by elite groups from the above-mentioned region.Also,the fact that stone sculptures inside the mausoleum alongside the spiritual path were duplicated implies that Li Maozhen and his wife might have been buried separately in two times.
