As a literary sub-genre,“theatre-fiction”is an important phenomenon in both Chinese and foreign novels. In light of the intermediality theory, its intermediality features two major categories:the intermedial hybridity and the intermedial reference.Borrowing from contemporary theories on theatre and performance, this study on“theatre-fiction”is focused on the modes, the process and the effects of intermedial interactions in novels.Such novels as Virginia Woolf’s Between Acts and Mo Yan’s Sandalwood Death are mainly studied so as to carry out detailed analysis on the innovations in the novelistic forms, the aesthetic experiences of the readers and the role of fictional works in the reimaging of both history and reality.
