Randall Jarrell is one of the most important war poets in 20th century America.The bulk of his war writing is marked by in-depth thoughts on the social mechanism,human nature,and belief system behind the great tragedy of the Second World War,and the scrutiny and rectification of the ethical errors that resulted in such a tragedy.Jarrell fuses such surreal elements as instinctual thoughts,imagination,and dream into the depictions of war scenarios,and constructs a dark,horrendous,and alienated war space in the overlapping of reality and illusion.For the purpose of self-heal,he also builds into his poetry a Utopian world that releases the trauma afflicted by the war.
