摘要
《白鲸》自问世以来,中外评论家们对其主题的阐释可谓众说纷纭、方兴未艾,但对于小说的结局,我国评论界似乎有了一致的结论:亚哈船长最后杀死了白鲸莫比-迪克并与之同归于尽。本文认为这是对原作文本的误读,它不仅曲解了小说的主旨,也极大地削弱了作品的深远寓意:麦尔维尔笔下具有神性的白鲸同自然一样是永生不朽的,它更不会和人类同归于尽。
Melville’s masterpiece Moby-Dick is a prophetical novel which has attracted much critical attention since its publication.But as to the finale of the novel,most Chinese critics hold the opinion that both the whale Moby-Dick and the hero captain Ahab die together at the end of the novel.This paper argues that such a reading is a misunderstanding of the original text,which not only distorts the original but also dwarfs the novel’s profound moral.Our interpretation reveals that Melville’s divine Moby-Dick is immortal and it will never die together with any man.
