The Snake Catcher is one of renowned works written by Liu Zongyuan,a litterateur in the Tang Dynasty. It is short and pithy with ingenious plot, and it bravely points out the problems in the society at that time. It’s featured with great literary value and in-depth analysis, making it one of the most acclaimed works among ancient Chinese classics. As for its English translation, there are altogether three influential versions:Xie Baikui’s Complaints of a Snake-Catcher,Luo Jingguo’s The Snake Catcher and The Snake-Catcher by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang. With the help of the corpus tool WordSmith, this paper aims to compare these three versions in the light of the eco-translatology and analyze them from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions.Through comparison,it is found that these three versions have all achieved a high degree of overall adaptation and selection, but Xie’s translation is the most effective in conveying the communicative intention of the original text,Luo’s version is relatively easy to read, and Yang’s language style is the closest to the original.
