On the Translation of Western Novels in Late Qing Dynasty China under the Politically Utility Context

晚清时期,西方小说通过译介源源不断地流入中国,客观上催生了文学本身的沿革,但主观上并非出于文学欣赏和艺术享受,而是出于社会政治变革之目的。在这种政治功利语境下的西方小说译介,无论其小说翻译理论主张、翻译选材还是翻译策略,难免会染上功利色彩,旨在借小说之力“多快好省”地让时人了解西方资本主义民主思想和先进科技知识,以实现其开启民智,救亡图存的目标。

In the late Qing Dynasty,the western novels were continuously introduced into China by means of translation,which brought about the evolution of literature itself objectively.But subjectively,the then translators did translation of western novels with the intention of social and political transformation rather than with the purpose of literary appreciation and artistic enjoyment.So the translation of western novels under the politically utility context of this sort was hard to avoid coming down with something utility either in the theoretical proposition of novel translation or in the selection of translating materials or in translation strategies so as to let people of the time understand the western capitalist democratic thought and the knowledge of advanced science and technology by reading translated novels,realizing the objectives of enlightening the people and saving the country so that it may survive.
