Campus and City:How School Campuses Shaped the Urban Space of Chengdu in Early Modern Period

学校是城市空间的重要组成部分,校园变迁往往会对城市空间产生深刻影响。在近代成都,新式学校出现之前城内以贡院为导向的旧式学校塑造出传统的城市空间。而清末民国时期,以国立四川大学及其前身为代表的新式学校逐渐成为成都城市空间构建的重要参与者,其开办和之后的校园变迁对当时成都城市空间演化产生了深刻影响,成为成都早期现代化的显著表达。

School campuses normally occupy an important part of urban space,and it is natural that changes of schools bring about changes of urban space.Take Chengdu as an example.Old schools represented by the gongyuan campuses(places for provincial-level imperial civil examination)were distributed in the city,but starting from late Qing and early republican period,new schools,National Sichuan University for example,emerged as important participators in constructing urban space.As a prominent sign of modernity,the opening of these new schools and the position of their campuses had exerted profound impact on the evolution of Chengdu's urban space.
