What is“Tower of Experience”:A Case Study of Chinese Versions of The Foreword of The Story of Mankind Regarding Translating Traces

译痕是译者在翻译中有意或无意留下、基于翻译而非写作的痕迹,译痕研究对英汉对比研究和翻译研究本身都有着积极的意义。文章以美国作家房龙《人类的故事•前言》的中译本为文本材料,指出其中存在的译痕现象,分析这些译痕产生的原因,并提出相应的改进意见和翻译策略。

Translating traces refer to the marks left by the translator by design or by chance in translation,different from writing.Therefore,researches into translating traces are conducive to the contrastive studies between English and Chinese as well as translation studies.By conducting a case study of Chinese versions of The Foreword of the book The Story of Mankind written by the American writer Hendrik Willem Van Loon,this paper points out where these translating traces are,why they are produced and how they can be improved or revised.It also puts forward some translating strategies and it is intended to contribute to further study in this field.
