In The Master and Margarita,Afranius is the captain of Pilate's secret guard,not at the core of the text,but he is the most enigmatic and elusive character in the entire novel,which is high lighted by his contradictory narrative of the crucifixion of Yeshua.This narrative contradiction can be resolved within the internal structure of the text:according to the three narrative worlds of history,myth and reality constructed by the text,this narrative contradiction arises,firstly,from Afranius'own role and self-perception in the historical world of Jerusalem,secondly,from the influence of the demonic element in the mythical world,and finally,this narrative contradiction is Bulgakov's insinuation and irony of the political power struggle in Moscow's real world.
