Cheng Zhongying’s Views about Yangming Studies in North America

美国夏威夷大学资深教授成中英先生论述了自上世纪五六十年代以来北美阳明学的发展,指出了陈荣捷的贡献与不足,尤其是在翻译和把握阳明学基本概念中存在的问题。北美学者通过中西和古今的比较来理解阳明思想,能够带来新意。不仅是传播与发展,还有中西比较视域下义理的澄清。在中西会通的基础上,成中英先生提出如何在英语世界来把握“心”“良知”,以及阳明学和朱子学在北美发展的关系问题,成圣与学以成人的联系和差异问题。

Cheng Zhongying, a senior professor at the University of Hawaii, discussed the development of Yangming studies in North America since the 1950s and 1960s, and pointed out Chen Rongjie’s contributions and shortcomings, especially the problems in translating and grasping the basic concepts of Yangming studies. The North American scholars’ understanding Yangming’s thought through the comparison between China and the west, ancient and modern can bring new ideas, which are not only the communication and development, but also the clarification of the theory from the perspective of comparison between China and the West. On the basis of the integration of China and the west, Cheng Zhongying proposed how to grasp the"heart"and"conscience"in the English world, the relationship between Yangming studies and Zhuxi studies in North America, and the relationship and difference between becoming a saint and learning to be human.
