After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Chinese National Government took over Taiwan, which had been occupied by the Japanese for 50 years. The assimilation policy of Japanese colonists and the import of Japanese songs led to the popularity of Japanese songs in Taiwan. The trend, especially the popularity of military songs, aroused the vigilance of officials in Taiwan to take cleanup action. The elements of Japanese songs in the 228 Incident and the identity of the local people symbolized by the incident made the KMT officials in Taiwan more worried. Gradually, they adopted a comprehensive policy of banning Japanese songs, but the influence of Japanese songs did not subside. After1949, the KMT authorities, which moved to Taiwan, also found the problem of the impact of Japanese songs. They tried to suppress the impact of Japanese songs together with provincial officials. However, this measure failed in 1953. Since then, banning Japanese songs is no longer the focus of the KMT’s song policy.
