Having been regarded as a sacred place of practicing Buddhism in the novels during the Jin and Tang Dynasties, temples were written as a place for small potatoes to worship and bless,a place for monks and nuns to accumulate wealth and indulge in sexual desire. From the perspective of space, this paper makes a study on the shift of literary writing according to the background of the development of Chinese Buddhism. The paper analysises the specific content and spatial characteristics and temple space desire expressed in the vernacular novels during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The writing of"Temple and Desire"reflects the novelists’the ambiguous attitude towards Buddhism. On the one hand, before the Northern Song Dynasty, the ancient Confucian scholars and Emperors had both collective and traditional emotions that were simultaniously both respect and exclusion of Buddhism;on the other hand, after the Northern Song Dynasty, the vigorous development of Folk Buddhism was the real social background of the literary shift. These two factors affected novelists’literary creation mentality.
