The legend of Mulan is mainly based on Ballad of Mulan in which she joins the army in place of her father, embodying filial piety and loyalty, core spirits in Chinese culture. For over a thousand years, the tale, despite its journey across time, geography and culture, shows the unique charm of Mulan as a national heroine with different forms, genres, and media. In the trend of globalization, the legend of Mulan has gradually travelled abroad to accept transcultural adaptation from the West, thus its plot and moral values are reshaped. This paper has analyzed what transformations the legend of Mulan has been made in the dissemination and acceptance in the United States, and probed into the motives behind such adaptations from cultural and commercial elements, then explored the ways to balance globalism and nationalism in transcultural adaptation from the aspect of response,so as to help us better understand Mulan with new connotations.
