Simone de Beauvoir authored autobiographic works totaling some one million words.The relationship between the narration and construction of the self in her autobiography can be scrutinized in light of the four dimensions proposed by Mark Freeman,namely,the historical dimension,the cultural dimension,the rhetorical dimension and the dimension of experience.The time-bound existence of each human being in the world was the essential motive force behind de Beauvoir’s autobiographic writing and with it,her quest to ponder and probe the meaning of life.The account of the turning points of her life came to construct a unique and charming self;while her attention to communication and interaction between the reader and herself throughout the narration aided a fuller construction of her self-identity.Writing about life is the necessary way for de Beauvoir to construct a new self.
