Volunteer Editing Behavior Retention Analysis of OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap(以下简称OSM)作为全球最大的开放地理信息数据项目,在科学发现、工程应用、公众服务等方面的广泛应用,使其成为全球重要的地理信息数据库,其数据质量、项目可持续性和长期稳定性是非常重要的。目前,针对OSM的研究大多集中于数据质量层面,难以从发展的视角分析其项目本身。鉴于OSM拥有超过500万志愿者,本文试图从志愿者贡献行为的角度出发,分析OSM社区的成长轨迹和发展模式。具体而言,本文验证了OSM志愿者的参与不均等性,将志愿者划分为初、中、高级三类活跃度用户,并采用经济管理学留存分析的方法对2005—2017年的OSM志愿者贡献行为数据进行了分析。分析结果表明OSM的贡献者数量目前处于一种低留存率下的稳定增长模式,并且存在大量的志愿者流失现象。

As the world's largest open geographic information data project,OpenStreetMap(hereinafter referred to as OSM),has been widely used in scientific discovery,engineering applications,public services,etc.,which making it an important global geographic information database.Its data quality,project sustainability and long-term stability are very important.At present,most of the on OSM focused on the data quality level,and it is difficult to analyze the OSM project itself from a development perspective.Given that OSM has more than five million volunteers,this article attempts to analyze the growth trajectory and development model of the OSM community from the perspective of volunteer contribution behavior.Specifically,first we verified the participation inequality of OSM volunteers,and divided OSM volunteers into three types:primary contributor,junior contributor,and senior contributor.We used the method of retention analysis in economics and management to analyze the OSM volunteer contribution behavior data from 2005 to 2017.The analysis results show that the number of OSM contributors is currently in a stable growth mode with a low retention rate,and there is volunteer.
