On the English Translation of the 19th Century Chinese Mongolian Classics——A Case Study of The Chinese Repository

19世纪中期,美国传教士裨治文通过《中国丛报》(1832-1851)向英语读者译介了中国蒙学典籍《千字文》。译文内容基本忠实于原文,但仍有文化误译和不公允的评论,代表了近代西方来华传教士对中国经典的西方化解读,体现了中国蒙学典籍英译肇始阶段的基本特征,在一定程度上推动和促进了中国蒙学典籍的早期对外传播。

In the middle of the 19th century,the American missionary E.C.Bridgman introduced and translated Chinese enlightenment classic Qianziwen(A Thousand Chinese Characters)through The Chinese Repository(1832-1851).His translation is basically loyal to its original version,but some cultural misinterpretation and unfair comments still exist.That represents western missionaries’westernized characteristics of interpreting Chinese classics,and also reflects the basic features in the beginning period when translating Chinese enlightenment classics into English.Bridgman’s introduction and translation is of a certain importance in promoting Chinese enlightenment classics’spreading overseas in the early phase.
