Charlotte Bronte’s last novel Villette embodies the developmental thought from nationalism to cosmopolitanism. The change of literary attitude reflects Bronte’s imagination of the future of nation and country. Belgium, where the story takes place, implies the dual meanings of nationalism and cosmopolitanism. The cultural conflict between Britain and France reflects Bronte’s nationalist thought, while cross-cultural marriages represent the reconciliation of cultural conflicts, which shows her cosmopolitan thought that is both forward-looking and limited.
