Tipping the Velvet is the first novel of the“Victoria Trilogy”written by contemporary British novelist Sarah Waters,which presents the female lifestyle and women’s marginalized status under the dominance of patriarchy in the Victorian era.The female subculture style,manifested in three dimensions of dressing,scenes and language,reflects the factors of“resistance”and“rebellion”that deviated from the mainstream culture then.Social revolutions,increasing female education and impact of new concepts and new civilizations,contributed to the formation of the style.The Victorian women who had long been subject to the censorship and surveillance of the patriarchal society were finally able to assert themselves between the traditional morality and modern civilization.
