M.A.K.Halliday has proposed a series of new ecolinguisitc ideas.The language-nature relationship is part of the relationship between language and reality,and can serve as a means of intervening in environmental crises.Language has the power to shape the ecological system and the human ability to mean is a product of the contradiction between our material being and our conscious being.Digging up covert grammatical categories can help disclose non-ecological elements in both human language systems and language use so as to reflect on our discourse and behavior destructive to nature.Language should be placed in its social and historical contexts so that language evolution can be better understood and that human deeds harming the environment can be curbed.Based on these,Halliday claims that linguistics and linguists have an active part to play in human concerted effort to solve ecological crises.
