The Color Purple,by the African American woman writer Alice Walker,is the coming of age story of two generations of black men.Their transition from blindly following the hegemonic masculini ty advocated by the mainstream culture of America to the construction of the new masculinity e mphasizes the possibility of changes in the development and growth of black males. In this way,Walker calls on black men to break through the patriarchal culture and the cage of sexism, and to free themselves from the shackles of male chauvinism and the traditional concept of gender role s,to build a complete and sound individual personality system and harmonious relationship betw een the two sexes, and to realize the internal regression of traditional masculinity.
