Discourse functions of the clause-initial shifting adverbs in English narratives——Taking Treasure Island as an example

英语漂移副词可位于句首、句中或句尾。从语义角度来看,句首漂移副词多数是时间副词和语气副词。时间副词漂移到句首时,具有标示话题界线、推动事件发展的语篇功能,且韵律独立的表瞬时性的时间副词具有情节节点标记的语篇功能。语气副词漂移到句首时,具有使语篇中话题链产生轻微断裂效应的功能。韵律独立的句首漂移副词在篇章中发挥的作用要远远大于不独立的情况。

English shifting adverbs may occur initially,medially or at the right edge in a clause.Semantically,they are mostly temporal and modal adverbs.When positioned clause-initially,they functions as topic boundary markers and facilitator of the development of events.The prosody-independent punctual adverbs play the role of plot marker.When the modal adverbs shift to the clause-initial position,they slightly hinder the topic chain.Besides,it is found that prosody-independent clause-initial shifting adverbs are more metadiscursively important than those are not.
