The article describes the complexity of the Danteum project by Giuseppe Terragni,one of the latest of his remarkable career,designed in 1938,one year before the outburst of World War II.The project is considered along the several researches that have been conducted in the last 70 years.This exceptional building is one of the missing milestone of the constellation of works offered by the masters of Modernism,among which the Italian architects formed a lively and active part;and of the Italian architects,Terragni is surely one of the highest personalities.Danteum is to be cherished not only as a unique and unprecedented design,but also to be understood as for the multiple levels of reading involved in its design.The importance of Danteum lies indeed in Terragni’s outstanding design ideas and practical skills,features that can be found constantly and consistently through his career.The aim of the article is then an invitation to ex plore the pro ject’s or ig ins through Terragni early career’s positions,and considering the importance of Dante as main inspiration and subject,whose literary and figurative inputs have been masterfully developed on this project.
