King-Lui Wu(1918-2002) was a descendent of the Wu Family who owned the Yu Yam Ancestral Garden in Guangdong,China. His family later sent him to study architecture in the United States.Having studied under Walter Gropius at Harvard, where Wu earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees,he later taught and practiced at Yale University.Humble and reserved,Wu assisted several deans of Yale School of Architecture in his 43 years of administrative service and pedagogical practice. He was an expert in plan configuration and dealing with the relation between daylight and architecture, and built a series of excellent projects of detached houses.By referring to King-Lui Wu’s drawings in the Yale Manuscripts and Archives Collection and the interviews with Wu’s family and friends, this paper dissects the evolution of Wu’s design strategies as well as his nostalgic ideas of gardens in South China.
