Brief Report on the 2018 Excavation at the Shichengzi Site in Qitai County,Xinjiang

石城子遗址位于新疆维吾尔自治区昌吉回族自治州奇台县半截沟镇麻沟梁村东北1.4公里,北距奇台县城约55公里。地理坐标为东经89°45′43.2″、北纬43°36′59.1″(图一)。该遗址所在区域北可通奇台、吉木萨尔等绿洲,向南穿越东天山山脉可至吐鲁番盆地,自古以来为连接天山南北的重要通道之一,地理位置十分重要。石城子遗址于1972年首次被发现[1],1988年第二次全国文物普查、2009年第三次全国文物普查中进行了详细调查[2],1999年被公布为自治区文物保护单位,2013年被国务院核定公布为全国重点文物保护单位。

Archaeological excavations of and inside the city gate at the Shichengzi site in Xinjiang in 2018 revealed a series of archaeological features,including doorways,platforms,corridors,gutters,houses,and post holes,etc.Unearthed architectural components such as plate tiles,tubular tiles,and roof-tile ends with cloud motifs,as well as pottery objects,are of typical Han style.According to the forms of surviving features,the city gate at the Shichengzi site was probably characterized by a long-lintel structure made up of a single doorway with a corridor and upper story.The Shichengzi site could have been used as a strategic outpost during the Han dynasties,or as the location of the Shule city documented in historical records.
